چکیده

Self-gravitating protostellar discs are unstable to fragmentation if the gas can cool on a time scale that is short compared to the orbital period. We use a combination of hydrodynamic simulations and N-body orbit integrations to study the long term evolution of a fragmenting disc with an initial mass ratio to the star of M disc /M * = 0.1. For a disc which is initially unstable across a range of radii, a combination of collapse and subsequent accretion yields substellar objects with a spectrum of masses extending (for a Solar mass star) up to ≈ 0.01 M ⊙. Subsequent gravitational evolution ejects most of the lower mass objects within a few million years, leaving a small number of very massive planets or brown dwarfs in eccentric orbits at moderately small radii. Based on these results, systems such as HD 168443 – in which the companions are close to or beyond the deuterium burning limit – appear to be the best candidates to have formed via gravitational instability. If massive substellar companions originate from disc fragmentation, while lower-mass planetary companions originate from core accretion , the metallicity distribution of stars which host massive substellar companions at radii of ∼ 1au should differ from that of stars with lower mass planetary companions.

Self-Gravitating Magnetically-Supported Protostellar Disks and the Formation of Substellar Companions

Isolated low-mass stars are formed, in the standard picture, from the collapse of dense cores condensed out of strongly magnetized molecular clouds. The dynamically collapsing inflow traps nearly half of the critical magnetic flux needed for the core support and deposits it in a small region surrounding the protostar. It has been argued previously that the deposited flux can slow down the inflo...

The DODO Survey II: A Gemini Direct Imaging Search for Substellar and Planetary Mass Companions around Nearby Equatorial and Northern Hemisphere White Dwarfs

The aim of the Degenerate Objects around Degenerate Objects (DODO) survey is to search for very low mass brown dwarfs and extrasolar planets in wide orbits around white dwarfs via direct imaging. The direct detection of such companions would allow the spectroscopic investigation of objects with temperatures much lower (< 500 K) than the coolest brown dwarfs currently observed. These ultra–low m...

A Search for Substellar Companions around 15 Weak-lined T Tauri Stars with the Planetary Camera 2 of the Hubble Space Telescope

To search for thermal emission from substellar companions, we have obtained Z-band images of 15 weak-lined T Tauri stars in the Taurus-Auriga and Ophiuchus star-forming regions using the Planetary Camera 2 on theHubble Space Telescope. We found 18 faint nearby objects at separations larger than 400 but none at smaller separations. For 11 of these we have enough color information to suggest that...

Do “ isolated ” planetary mass objects orbit invisible stellar mass companions ?

Do " isolated " planetary mass objects orbit invisible stellar mass companions? Abstract We propose that the " isolated " planetary mass objects observed by Zapa-tero Osorio et al in the σ Orionis cluster might actually be in orbit around invisible stellar mass companions such as mirror stars. The existence of such objects can be motivated by the dark matter problem and the observation of MACHO...

Probing long-period companions to planetary hosts VLT and CFHT near infrared coronographic imaging surveys

Aims. We present the results of a deep imaging survey of stars surrounded by planets detected with the radial velocity technique. The purpose is to search for and to characterize long-period stellar and substellar companions. The sample contains a total of 26 stars, among which 6 exhibit additional radial velocity drifts. Methods. We used NACO, at the ESO Very Large Telescope, and PUEO-KIR, at ...
